Date: 29/11/2011
Newcastle Central is to be upgraded as part of a £100 million station improvement initiative. The scheme has been introduced by the Department for Transport, Network Rail, the Association of Train Operating Companies and the Office for Rail Regulation.
Passengers using Newcastle Central will benefit from new lifts and escalators, an improved bridge and new glazed canopies to increase the amount of natural light that enters the site.
As well as better waiting rooms and toilets, there will also be shops and new signage.
Network Rail's Route Manager for London North Eastern Phil Verster said the station is "an incredibly busy and important transport hub for the north-east" and the upgrades will improve passengers' experiences.
"Significantly, the finished station will also give a better first impression to visitors to the city," he added.
Bolton train station also underwent a makeover recently and £4 million was spent on refurbishing the footbridge, erecting a new canopy and putting up information screens for travellers.
