Next generation EVs 'will feature multiple batteries'

Date: 13/7/2011
Multiple batteries will be used to power the next generation of electric vehicles (EVs).Such is the prediction of Robert Hokin, Chief Executive of ecoConnect CIC, who says that one of the potential areas of improvement for cars currently fuelled in this way is their storage technology.
However, he adds that there appears to be "serious" investment going into battery innovations.
Solutions currently under development include the range-extending Better Place network, which sees drivers visiting special forecourts and disposing of dead cells in exchange for a new one before continuing their journey.
It is believed this would take a similar amount of time to refuelling a conventional motor with petrol.
"Whether or not that becomes a mainstream technology, it will certainly be an option, as well as quick-charging technologies on electric vehicles," Mr Hokin notes.
According to the Boston Consulting Group, the electric cars of the future will "undoubtedly" play a significant role in the carbon reduction targets of countries around the world.
