North-east prepared for EV revolution, says study

Date: 28/5/2013
New research led by Newcastle University has suggested that the existing infrastructure of charging points across the north-east is enough to make electric vehicles a "viable transport option".The research comes hot on the heels of criticism directed at ministers over the failure to implement a system that would support the use of EVs.
The study, which forms part of a £10.7 million trial investigating the impact EVs could have on the environment, transport systems and driver behavior, confirmed that EVs reduce transport-related pollution in our cities
What's more, it was also found that they produce less CO2 per mile than a combustion engine.
Phil Blythe, Professor of Intelligent Transport Systems at Newcastle University, said: "This has been a huge undertaking over the past three years, involving almost 200 volunteer drivers from across the north-east to help us build up the first true picture of what a low-carbon transport system might look like in the future."
