Nottingham tram extension project 'will cut carbon'

Nottingham tram extension project 'will cut carbon'

Date: 19/12/2011

Nottingham's tram system is to be extended in a move it is hoped will encourage people to leave their car at home when they need to visit the city centre.

Transport Minister Norman Baker explained the changes will support the government's environmental policy and reduce carbon by encouraging a "modal shift."

The extensions will stretch to Chilwell/Beeston and Clifton and join up to Link One at Nottingham Stations.

It is thought the project will cost £570 million, £371 million of which will be provided by the Department for Transport.

Mr Baker said the changes will contribute to the regeneration of the area and create "quicker, more convenient access to the city centre, as well as providing an alternative means of accessing the city centre for people commuting by car."

Tramlink Nottingham has recently taken over as the new operator of the city's light rail network and changes were introduced to its ticketing system.
