Nottingham tram extension proposals given go-ahead

Date: 25/3/2011
Plans to extend a tram system in Nottingham have been given the green light by the government.According to the Department of Transport (DoT), the savings have been identified that will serve to make delivery of the project more affordable.
As a result, Line One from Nottingham Station could receive two extensions - one going to Clifton and the other to Chilwell/Beeston - with Nottingham City Council now set to enter the next stage of the funding approval process.
Transport Minister Norman Baker said Line One has already been successful in encouraging more people to take advantage of public travel networks.
He added: "These proposed extensions provide the opportunity to continue this success and give people in the south of Nottingham quicker, more convenient access to the city centre, as well as helping to regenerate sections of the city."
Earlier in the week, the DoT revealed that a pilot scheme to introduce lightweight tram-trains between Sheffield and Rotherham is still on track thanks to a government grant worth £150,000.
