Number of uninsured young drivers falls

Date: 2/4/2012
There has been a decrease in the number of young motorists driving without insurance.Figures released by the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) showed 125,000 17 to 20-year-olds are using the roads without cover, compared with double that number three years ago.
It is thought the decline has occurred due to the introduction of the Continuous Insurance Enforcement law, which cross-checks the DVLA database with the Motor Insurance Database to catch people out.
On-road policing has also contributed to the fall, the MIB stated.
Chief Executive of the organisation Ashton West said: "There are more than a million drivers under the age of 20 on our roads and having insurance in place is crucial to protect inexperienced young drivers and other motorists."
This data comes just after research from MoneySupermarket.com showed 16 per cent of motorists have driven when they were not insured, with 18 per cent of these claiming it was because they were unaware they needed protection.
