Off-road motorcycling 'could be deadly'

Off-road motorcycling 'could be deadly'

Date: 16/8/2010

Police have warned off-road motorcyclists in Peterborough they are putting themselves and others at risk.

Neighbourhood Police Sergeant Luke Coulson told the Peterborough Evening Telegraph officers have received more calls than usual recently about dangerous riding at former brick pits and on footpaths.

"It is extremely dangerous and it could be deadly … we even had one report of a six-year-old child on a mini-moto in the middle of the road," he said.

Police are concerned many people are breaking regulations by riding without helmets and on bikes that are not insured or taxed.

Sergeant Coulson continued all motorcyclists will have been told these rules during obligatory basic training and therefore have no excuse for putting themselves and members of the public at risk.

Earlier this month, Dr John Heyworth, President of the College of Emergency Medicine told BBC Radio 1 the law should be changed to force quad bike riders to wear helmets.
