Older drivers urged to stay safe

Date: 19/5/2010
An event to encourage motorists who have been driving for more than 30 years to stay safe on the roads is being organised in Rochdale. The Impact Partnership Road Safety Team, the Driving Standards Agency and the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) are behind the initiative.
All aspects of driving including pedestrian crossings, gyratory systems and roundabouts will be discussed in the session.
During the second part of the conference representatives from the IAM will be on hand to offer motorists free assessments, which will focus on the actual roads drivers use, so those who travel on just local carriageways will be given advice on ways to stay safe.
According to the Greater Manchester Casualty Reduction Partnership website, a lot of older drivers have read the Highway Code, but only when they learnt to drive, rather than reading it on a regular basis - so many could do with a refresher course.
RideSafe BackSafe recently held a safety day in Blackpool to offer advice to parents and their kids who ride bicycles on the roads.
