Olympics transport Big Build complete

Date: 6/6/2011

Work has now completed on Stratford Station in London, bringing to an end the Big Build project that was undertaken in preparation for next year's Olympics.

The transport hub will act as the main gateway to next summer's Games and the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) notes that ten different rail routes will serve it during the lead-up to and following the event.

According to the Road Haulage Association (RHA), the news that building work and upgrades are finished is welcome as it will help to keep spectators moving once the competition kicks off in 2012.

It states that it is now partnering with Transport for London (TfL) and the ODA to ensure that non-London travellers experience minimal disruption next year.

RHA claims that now the Big Build has come to a close the main focus will shift towards venues outside of the capital's boundaries, such as Coventry, Manchester, Glasgow and Newcastle, among others.

Sites likes the City of Coventry Stadium - where eight major football matches will be held in 13 days - need to be the subject of consideration as the disruption encountered by haulage companies and local firms as a result of the events will be both inevitable and considerable, it adds

"We are pleased that both TfL and the ODA have asked for our cooperation to ensure that information regarding the impact of the Games reaches the widest possible audience," RHA Chief Executive Geoff Dunning said.
