Oyster card system 'too complicated'

Date: 12/7/2013
The Oyster card system used to pay for public transport in London is too complicated and overcharges passengers, a leading watchdog has said.According to London Travelwatch, confusion surrounding the service leads to people paying more than they should for their journeys, while not everyone understands how it works.
As the Evening Standard reports, the watchdog has called for more transparency about the system in order to ensure Londoners are charged fairly and clearly when travelling around the capital.
Tim Bellenger, Director of Policy and Investigations at the organisation, said: "People don’t know how Oyster works and it needs to be more transparent so they can work out what they are being charged. It feeds into the feeling that fares don’t give value for money.
He added that better communication and a concentrated effort to improve knowledge on behalf of Transport for London were needed in order to instil confidence in passengers.
