Park and Ride capacity in York 'to be increased'

Date: 23/3/2010
Plans to increase the capacity of Park and Ride schemes in York have received government approval, the Department for Transport has confirmed.Costing £25 million, the new scheme will involve the relocation and expansion of an existing site, from Askham Bar closer to the A64.
The number of Park and Ride spaces in the city will also be increased under the new initiative, from 3,750 to 5,350.
It is hoped the project will make the public transport system a real alternative to driving into the city, decreasing congestion and carbon emissions.
An additional 500 new spaces will also be created at Clifton Moor, and a further 600 spaces will be made at Poppleton Bar.
Transport minister Sadiq Khan commented: "This investment underlines the government's firm commitment to delivering major improvements in the Yorkshire and Humber region."
The Department for Transport has also recently revealed that Leeds is to benefit from public transport upgrades.
