Passenger numbers on Tube network hit record high

Passenger numbers on Tube network hit record high

Date: 26/6/2013

Passenger numbers on London's Tube, DLR and Overground trains hit a record high in 2012/13, with reliability now at its strongest level ever.

That's according to new figures released by (TfL) Transport for London, which also revealed that Tube and bus networks in the capital operated over 97 per cent of scheduled services over the past year.

The statistics, which account for the year ending March 2013, were praised by Mayor Boris Johnson, who explained that TfL is continuing to improve the efficiency of the capital's transport infrastructure.

"London's transport system is carrying more people, more reliably, safely and efficiently than at any point in history," he said.

"We are also delivering impressively on one of the biggest investment programmes being undertaken anywhere on the planet.

"This means new rail lines, the modernisation of our 150-year-old Tube, the arrival of Crossrail, new trains and buses, improved roads and traffic signals and a step-change in facilities for cyclists."

With Tube delays down by 20 per cent on a year-on-year basis, services on the network are now more reliable than at any point in its 150-year history, while almost 99 per cent of DLR trains ran on time.

Indeed, the DLR also carried a record 100 million passengers over the course of 2012/13, and the numbers travelling on London Overground services have doubled in the space of two years.

As well as the quality of the existing network, TfL's report also outlined improvements that have been made throughout the capital in the 12-month period - namely the completion of the London Overground orbital railway, which now links Clapham Junction to Surrey Quays.

Additional advancements included continued progress with Northern line upgrades and the implementation of measures to transform Victoria Underground station - a project which is still ongoing as the area is made more accessible to passengers.
