Personal EV charging units 'more popular than public facilities'

Date: 23/2/2012
Businesses with an electric vehicle (EV) are more likely to use personal charging units than facilities in the street. This is according to Dr Ben Lane of Next Green Car, who claimed although public units are an additional incentive to firms thinking of adopting the vehicles, they are not an integral part of the decision-making process.
"If you are quite serious about purchasing electric vehicles as part of your fleet you will obviously make provisions for charging somewhere in your depot or car park," Dr Lane commented.
He noted a trial conducted in Berlin found street charging points were rarely used and people much preferred to rely on their own home charging units.
However, he previously noted improving the public charging infrastructure would send a positive message, showing the government is behind the initiative and wants to get more people driving low-carbon motors.
The expert believes such vans can be an excellent addition to a company's fleet if it has a regular drive cycle.
