Plans revealed to keep London moving in cold weather

Date: 25/11/2010

Road salt stocks have been doubled in London in anticipation of severe weather conditions affecting travel in the capital.

Transport for London (TfL), borough councils and the Mayor's Transport Advisor announced plans today (November 25th) to keep the city moving during the winter.

A network of essential routes has been agreed, including roads and paths around hospitals and police stations, which will be kept open even throughout the harshest weather.

Furthermore, TfL has increased its salt stocks from 9,000 to 18,000 tonnes since last year.

Kulveer Ranger, Transport Advisor to the Mayor, said: "These salt mountains clearly illustrate our preparations for the cold weather this winter."

The way last year's cold snap was dealt with has been carefully examined and improved upon, "to make sure we are well placed to be able to keep Londoners safely on the move," he added.

Earlier this week, the Institute of Advanced Motorists urged drivers to prepare their cars for winter by carrying out simple checks on their vehicles.
