Police promote road safety with new supercar

Date: 26/1/2011

Road safety is set to be the focus of a unique police event featuring the new Lotus Evora supercar.

The South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership will display the vehicle in police livery at the Meadhowhall shopping centre in Sheffield on Saturday (January 29th) as part of the launch of the organisation's new road safety campaign.

One of the main focuses of the event will be on persuading young drivers to wear seatbelts and avoid paying attention to distractions such as mp3 players and mobile phones while driving.

Beer goggles, a breath testing machine and a driving simulator will also be on hand to push home the road safety message. It is hoped that the presence of the 3.5-litre Lotus Evora - which can go from zero to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds - will attract more people to the event.

"We don't have any plans to use such cars to police the roads in South Yorkshire; however, Lotus have kindly loaned the car to the South Yorkshire Police completely free of charge," said Chief Inspector Stuart Walne, Head of Road Policing in South Yorkshire.
