Police urge car owners to store keys securely

Date: 16/7/2010

West Midlands Police have urged motorists to be vigilant when it comes to their car keys, following a spate of burglaries in the area.

Officers stated drivers should keep their keys in a secure place in the home and should always store their car in a garage if they have one.

Superintendent Dave Sturman said there have been a number of occasions when thieves have stolen car keys from someone's property and then driven off in a vehicle.

"Due to increased technology, car thieves these days need to get keys from the owners in order to steal them and we want to warn people to make sure they do not make themselves vulnerable," he added.

Neighbourhood policing teams will be raising awareness of this type of crime by delivering leaflets to local residents.

Police in Buckinghamshire recently recovered a number of stolen automobiles and arrested two suspects after a tracker in a stolen car led them to the site.
