Portsmouth police crack down on drink driving

Date: 22/12/2010

Drink driving is the focus of police in Portsmouth at the moment, as the build-up to Christmas and new year sees officers concentrating on road safety.

According to local publication The News, police in the city are carrying out spot checks on passing motorists to ascertain whether they have been drinking and are driving over the limit.

Officers from Cosham police station spent three hours on the task recently and during the evening they pulled over 60 motorists, leading to one arrest and charge.

Acting Sergeant Nick Mills said the message of such operations was road safety and also saw officers ensuring that people's vehicles were safe.

"As well as checking drivers for alcohol we also want to check the whole safety initiative, such as correct insurance and whether headlights are working correctly," he explained.

Mr Mills concluded by reminding individuals that getting behind the wheel after drinking alcohol is dangerous.

The current weather conditions have also made driving more hazardous, with the AA recently reporting that it has seen an increase in claims as a result of the snow and ice.
