Pothole repair subject of £100m additional government funding

Date: 24/2/2011
The damage caused to UK roads during the winter is to be tackled, as the government has announced it is making additional funding available to go towards this.According to the Department for Transport, more than £100 million will be provided for repairing potholes, on top of the £831 million already in place for road maintenance this year.
And the government has already announced it will be spending £3 billion over the next four years on keeping UK roads in good condition.
The department points out that every council in the country has a duty to ensure that its roads are well maintained, but the "exceptional" weather seen this winter has caused significant additional harm.
Transport Secretary Philip Hammond said: "I am determined to see the winter damage to our roads fixed as quickly as possible and we will be working with councils to make sure that happens."
Driving over potholes can cause damage to vehicles, particularly to their tyres.
According to TyreSafe, other risks to this part of a vehicle include driving over debris and scuffing against kerbs, meaning it is important that tyres are checked regularly.
