Practical driving tests return to Southend-on-Sea

Date: 12/4/2012
Practical driving tests are once again set to take place in Southend-on-Sea.The former examination centre closed in 2008 following the launch of a new site in Basildon.
However, in a bid to provide a more localised service to those learning to drive, the Department for Transport has announced the Southend centre will re-open on May 14th.
Road Safety Minister Mike Penning said the government has worked with the local community to make the change happen.
"I want us to be more flexible and innovative in delivering driving tests to make sure that we are offering people the best service possible wherever they live," he added.
The Driving Standards Agency is also considering the introduction of driving tests that can be run on a part-time basis from local authority buildings such as community centres.
Southend is not the only place to see the return of its practical driving test centre, as learners in Bury are now able to take their exams in the town following the re-opening of its site.
