Date: 15/5/2013
A new procurement programme designed to make Transport for London (TfL) contractors' lorries more cyclist-friendly has won a prestigious award.Indeed, the programme has been named ‘best London cycling initiative’ in the London Cycling Awards.
The scheme was praised on account of reducing the number of cyclists killed by lorries each year.
What’s more, it was hailed for helping to promote a "culture of safety" among haulage contractors in the London.
The programme requires contractors to have bronze accreditation in the authority’s Fleet Operator Recognition scheme.
Andy McCarroll, Project Manager of Freight and Feet Programmes at Transport for London, told supplymanagement.com: "It gives them a valuable insight into how vulnerable London’s cyclists feel.
"In the morning many of them are sceptical but by the afternoon they’re really enjoying it."
Allied to this, contractors working for TfL need to make sure they have high-visibility mirrors installed on their vehicles.
