Professional drivers 'need to make road safety a priority'

Date: 17/9/2010
Action needs to be taken to improve the motoring habits of the freight industry, the drivers section of the Recruitment and Employment Federation (REC) has claimed.Working in partnership with other bodies to improve road safety is a number one priority, the group said.
The organisation noted that the reduction in incidents related to poor driving has been significantly slower in professional motorists than other groups, such as young people and motorcyclists.
Rod Harris, Chair of the body, commented: "Action must be taken to ensure that the right selection procedures are in place and that through ongoing training, we improve our drivers' behaviour and awareness."
A safer freight industry would reduce the number of road accidents and improve driving conditions for all road users, he added.
It was recently revealed by Driving for Better Business that there are some 14,000 fatalities and serious injuries involving those who drive for a living every year.
