Proposals to increase UK bus travel revealed

Date: 9/3/2010

The government has proposed a series of initiatives designed to increase bus travel in the UK.

The plans are outlined in a consultation paper, with suggestions about how to make buses safer and services more reliable.

One plan suggested is banning the consumption of alcohol on buses. Transport minister Sadiq Khan stated his belief that bus passengers should not have to suffer from drunks being onboard.

Another proposal is to require that all new services operate without variation for a minimum of 90 days.

It is thought this move would provide a greater degree of stability for bus passengers.

Mr Khan stated: "Two-thirds of all public transport journeys are by bus and passengers deserve a better travelling experience."

Meanwhile, the government announced yesterday (March 8th) that Manchester's Metrolink is to be benefit from additional extensions.
