Public consultation on Northern Line announced

Date: 10/5/2011
Proposals to extend the Northern Line by three km using private sector funding are to be the topic of discussion at a public consultation that has been initiated this week.Transport for London (TfL) and developer Treasury Holdings have announced the commencement of the process, which began yesterday (May 9th) and will finish on June 17th.
The plan is to extend the Underground service from Kensington to Battersea Power Station as part of a larger project to regenerate Greater London Authority areas including Vauxhall, Battersea and Nine Elms.
It is hoped that the new infrastructure would enable the communities to support the construction of 16,000 new properties and 25,000 jobs.
Local people will be able to visit exhibitions focussing on the proposals and will also receive a leaflet asking for their views.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: "I hope local people will visit the exhibitions and respond to the consultation as the plans have the potential to transform this part of London into a thriving new quarter and deliver the first expansion of the Northern Line for around 70 years."
The extension would include two new stations at Nine Elms and Battersea.
London's Tube network is currently undergoing "huge and essential" upgrades, according to TfL, to help it support a growing population.
