Public transport crime falls in London

Public transport crime falls in London

Date: 3/6/2011

There has been a decline in the amount of crime reported on the pubic transport network in the UK capital.

Figures released by the British Transport Police and the Metropolitan Police Service show that on the Underground and Docklands Light Railway, such incidents fell by seven per cent during the last year.

Meanwhile, the bus network has been subject to four per cent fewer offences, Transport for London (TfL) reports.

A number of steps have been taken in order to tackle crime on the public travel system, including establishing Safer Transport Teams in the city's boroughs, banning the consumption of alcohol and improving safety and security for passengers.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: "The additional investment in safer transport team officers we created and extra British Transport Police officers we provided are doing a great job of helping keep Londoners safe."

Meanwhile, a partnership between the Mayor, TfL, Metropolitan and City of London Police has resulted in 1,300 unlicensed minicab operators being arrested in the last 12 months.
