Public carbon reporting scheme welcomed

Date: 18/2/2010
A proposal for public reporting of carbon emissions from the freight transport industry has been welcomed by secretary of state for transport Lord Adonis.A letter from Lord Adonis to the Freight Transport Association (FTA) signalled the support of the Department for Transport (DfT) for the Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme.
Climate change manager at the FTA Rachael Dillon said the organisation is grateful for the support of the DfT in this area.
The FTA noted that the logistics sector accounts for some 30 per cent of all domestic transport emissions, highlighting the need for a reduction of emissions in this area. However, there has not been an increase in total carbon emissions since 1995, despite growth of the sector, the FTA states.
"Together with the DfT we will develop a robust and consistent carbon measurement and reporting method that will be fair, accurate and eminently useful in the interests of mitigating the sector's environmental impact," said Ms Dillon.
The Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme is designed to publicly report carbon dioxide emissions from the logistics sector as part of a process to help reduce its environmental impact.
