Purpose-built bus and coach registrations increase

Date: 7/12/2011

There has been an increase in the number of purpose-built buses and coaches being registered in the UK.

Figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders revealed there was a 63.1 per cent growth in registrations of this type in November, while the figure was up 6.3 per cent for the year.

Chief Executive of the organisation Paul Everitt explained although the sector dipped for four months of the year, it has been stable since May.

The "government's Green Bus Fund will provide a much-needed stimulus to the market, rewarding the low carbon innovations manufacturers are making across the sector," he added.

While bus registrations alone went up by 43.5 per cent in November, those for coaches were down for the month, but up by 9.1 per cent for the year as a whole.

Last month, the Department for Transport explained an effective bus network in the UK could provide an "attractive" alternative to cars and help reduce harmful emissions.
