Qatar National Road Safety Strategy launched

Date: 15/1/2013
A ten-year National Road Safety Strategy has been launched in Qatar in order to improve the safety record in the state and reduce accidents.TRL worked in partnership with AECOM in order to deliver road safety consultancy services for Ashghal Public Works Authority over a period of a year and a half, which have helped to inform the strategy.
Road safety was acknowledged as a major concern in Qatar under the Cabinet Resolution No (33), 2010, which was endorsed by HH the Deputy Emir.
In light of this, the National Road Safety Committee was formed with the aim of improving the country's road safety record beyond what has been achieved in recent years.
TRL worked in collaboration with the committee, which will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of the strategy as well as a five-year action plan.
Engineer Nasser Ali Al Mawlawi, President of the Public Works Authority, said at the launch of the strategy that it was a step in the right direction.
He urged all communities and institutions to work together so that its ambitious goals can be achieved.
In order to develop a comprehensive document to guide road safety over the next ten years, TRL undertook a series of important research tasks.
These included interviewing stakeholders, analysing crash data and carrying out field visits, so that a full picture of the current road safety situation could be achieved.
TRL then compared its findings with international best practice and developed the strategy and action plan in line with the targets the committee had outlined.
All road safety stakeholders in Qatar have been involved in the consultation process and the outcome is in line with Qatar’s National Vision and the National Development Strategy.
