Qatar planning multi-billion transport upgrades

Date: 22/4/2013

Qatar is expected to invest $70 billion (£46 million) in improving its transport infrastructure over the course of the next ten years.

Spending will be ploughed into projects that have already been planned, with the majority of funding to be dedicated to the country's rail and metro network.

It is also expected that significant sums will be put towards modernising Qatar's road systems - including the implementation of an extensive expressway - while there are further proposals for the expansion of Doha International Airport.

Speaking ahead of the 4th Annual Qatar Transport Conference - scheduled to take place in May - MEED Events Chairman Edmund O'Sullivan said: "The next ten years will be a crucial turning for Qatar's transition into a highly progressive metropolis, with a transport system that will be amongst the most modern in the world."

As part of the investment project, somewhere between 400 and 600 kilometres of existing roads will be upgraded.
