Quiet delivery trial results set to be released

Date: 17/6/2011
Mike Penning, the Transport Minister, is to unveil the findings of a recent trial into making quiet deliveries. He will attend the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health in London on June 28th 2011 to present the results of the research, which was developed by a consortium made up of the Freight Transport Association (FTA), the Department for Transport and the Noise Abatement Society.
Managed by Transport and Travel Research (TTR), the scheme supported a number of quiet delivery initiatives at English retail premises last year to highlight the benefits of allowing commercial goods vehicles to operate early in the morning or late at night.
The project aimed to focus on out-of-hours drop-offs that did not cause local residents to be disturbed by excessive noise.
According to the FTA, delivering goods during these times can help to ease congestion on the roads, improve efficiency and costs for businesses and lower pollution.
TTR also points out that it can lessen the conflict between orders arriving and customers entering a store.
Along with the results of the study, Mr Penning will also detail the methodology behind it and the analysis that took place.
