"World's first" diesel plug-in hybrid announced

Date: 21/2/2011

The "world's first" plug-in hybrid to be powered by diesel is set to be showcased next month by its creator, Volvo.

According to the car manufacturer, it will unveil the vehicle at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.

The new car - a Volvo V60 which is said to be almost production-ready - boasts carbon dioxide emissions below 50 g/km and will be coming to the market in 2012.

Following work carried out with energy supplier Vattenfall, Volvo hopes that the car will offer drivers the low fuel consumption and carbon emissions output of an electric motor, combined with the high performance and long distance of a diesel model.

In addition, owners will have the choice of how they wish to drive, leading the manufacturer to call the V60 "three cars in one".

The options available are using the vehicle as an electric car with a range of up to 32 miles; as a high-efficiency hybrid; or as a motor with a combined output of 215 + 70 horsepower and acceleration from zero to 62 mph in 6.9 seconds.

Stefan Jacoby, President and Chief Executive Officer of Volvo Cars, says: "The second-generation hybrid is the perfect choice for the uncompromising buyer who wants a superbly carbon dioxide-lean car packed with driving pleasure."

BMW, Honda and Nissan will also be showcasing green vehicles at the Geneva event.
