Rail improvement work 'will not inconvenience passengers'

Rail improvement work 'will not inconvenience passengers'

Date: 9/12/2011

Most of the UK's main train routes will be unaffected by improvement work to take place over Christmas and New Year.

Network Rail will be laying new tracks and repairing bridges, as well as upgrading signalling systems and improving stations over the festive period.

However, it has advised customers that the majority of main rail routes will remain open with little disruption.

These include the three major lines connecting London, the midlands, the north of England and Scotland.

Network Rail's Managing Director of Network Operations Robin Gisby explained the organisation is working hard to upgrade Britain's rail network.

"Passengers will see more trains, fewer buses and a better service this Christmas holiday period as our vital improvement work uses new techniques and equipment that reduces the impact on train services," he added.

One of the changes currently taking place is the removal of a bridge at Cow Lane near Reading, which is making way for a new structure in a bid to reduce congestion and make life easier for rail passengers.
