Record number of trips on London service for travellers with disabilities

Date: 22/7/2011
Dial-a-Ride - a service that provides door-to-door transportation to Londoners with disabilities - has clocked up a record number of trips.According to Transport for London (TfL), in the last year it has provided more journeys than at any other point since its launch in the 1980s.
Indeed, 1,345,152 trips were taken by people using the service in 2010 - 90,000 more than were recorded in 2009.
Those with permanent or long-term disabilities can register for Dial-a-Ride and enjoy being transported from wherever they are directly to their chosen destination.
It particularly benefits individuals who are unable to access mainstream public travel services.
Paul Blackwell, Dial-a-Ride General Manager, says: "We know from members' feedback that the service is very much appreciated and independent surveys record high overall customer satisfaction."
He adds that last year, 91 out of 100 users said they were satisfied with the initiative.
Earlier in July, TfL invited members of the public to offer their views on how accessibility to the capital's transport infrastructure could be improved and which projects within the Mayor's Transport Strategy Accessibility Implementation Plan should be given priority.
