Reducing fuel duty 'would help avoid recession'

Date: 26/4/2012
Reducing fuel duty in the UK would have helped to prevent the country from slipping into a double-dip recession. This is according to the Road Haulage Association, which expressed its disappointment that the economy has contracted.
Chief Executive of the organisation Geoff Dunning claimed the situation could have been avoided if the fuel tax had been reduced by the government.
"The price of a tank of fuel would reduce and the subsequent savings would be put back into the economy, giving trade the boost it so desperately needs," he stated.
Mr Dunning added that both drivers who use petrol and diesel are "desperate" for a price reduction, especially as the barrel price of fuel is at its lowest level for a considerable time.
Forecourt charges are far too high in comparison, the expert noted.
The Freight Transport Association agrees, as it also believes fuel duty needs to be reduced to help generate jobs and boost Britain's ailing economy.
