Regular tyre checks 'will help keep drivers safe'

Regular tyre checks 'will help keep drivers safe'

Date: 29/9/2010

Drivers should carry out a simple test to check the tread depth of their tyres on a regular basis.

That is the view of Stuart Jackson, Chairman of TyreSafe, who said completing a check just once a month will help keep motorists safe and legal on the roads.

People following his advice need to measure the tread grooves of a tyre with a 20p coin - if the outer rim of the coin is covered, the car is legal.

TyreSafe has launched an advertisement showing two seven-year-old children carrying out the assessment to encourage road users to follow suit and show how "simple and easy" it is to do, Mr Jackson stated.

According to the organisation, sufficient tread depth is crucial to road safety as without it, motorists may experience a loss of grip, resulting in longer stopping distances.

National Tyres and Autocare recently announced they are offering customers free checks on their wheels in support of October's Tyre Safety Month.
