Replacement bridge to be installed in Sheffield

Date: 16/12/2011
A new bridge is being installed in Sheffield to improve conditions for road users. It will replace the current Woodseats Road structure and work will take place over the Christmas period when there will be no trains running on the tracks underneath.
The improvements, which are being funded by Sheffield City Council, will mean the weight restriction currently imposed on the structure can be removed.
It will also be easier to maintain and eliminate the need for traffic lights on the bridge.
Work will take place overnight after Christmas to restore utilities through the bridge and the road surface.
Councillor Leigh Bramall, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport at Sheffield City Council, said: "These works are essential to protect the safety of the railway and the people who use the bridge every day."
The Cummersdale Viaduct that crosses the River Caldew and carries the twin-track Cumbria coast railway between Carlisle and Dalston is also set to be replaced over the Christmas period.
