Rereading Highway Code 'could improve road safety'

Date: 26/4/2011

Taking the time to refresh their knowledge of the Highway Code could see drivers help to make roads in the UK safer, one sector commentator claims.

Adrian Walsh, Director of RoadSafe, says this is a "simple tip" to improving motor safety, as is always obeying the law.

"We actually purchase the right to the huge mobility which a car gives us. With that contract comes observance of the law, the car itself, protection of self and [of] others - [ie] insurance and of course taxation," he points out.

Mr Walsh makes his suggestions after research by Santander revealed that three out of ten men and one-fifth of women have encountered a near-miss on the road as a result of being distracted while behind the wheel.

Eating, drinking and adjusting the stereo were all cited as causes.

Meanwhile, 11 per cent of male motorists who have had a car accident revealed it was because they were distracted at the time.
