Residents help police catch speeding drivers

Date: 18/11/2010
Residents in Sutton have been helping police to catch speeding drivers after telling the force they wanted more action on road safety.Officers from Beddington South Safer Neighbourhoods Team were joined by Tim Foley and Michael Bool this week, who assisted with taking registration numbers of 30 motorists during a one-hour session for exceeding 30 mph speed limits, not wearing a seatbelt and using a handheld mobile phone.
Drivers will be sent letters from police warning them they will be prosecuted if offences are repeated.
Mr Foley said: "We want to do all we can do to stop motorists speeding in this road, which is used by families and children walking to and from local schools, shops and the park."
Elsewhere in the country, the Journal recently reported a Northumberland safety campaign has been launched to warn young people of the dangers of speeding after two 17-year-old boys lost their lives in separate accidents on rural roads last year.
