Review of UK's rail industry launched

Date: 15/6/2010
Transport Secretary Philip Hammond has called for an independent review of the rail industry to see whether it offers value for money.Sir Roy McNulty will carry out the investigation and speed up the assessment so the findings will be ready for the autumn.
A report by the Department for Transport and the Office of Rail Regulation has already listed the key issues that will be explored.
Mr Hammond noted the aim of the study will be to create a sustainable future for rail users and he said passengers have asked why UK railways are so much more expensive than those in European countries.
"Given the very significant financial constraints that we face, it is essential that we drive out inefficiencies and reduce costs," he remarked.
Mr Hammond added better value for money is needed in order to avoid an increase in fares and protect train services.
Last week, Road Safety Minister Mike Penning announced a review of the current motorcycle and testing training system.
He explained the training given to would-be bikers is imperative in reducing the numbers injured or killed on the roads.
