Road accidents increase in snow and ice

Date: 8/12/2010

There has been a significant increase in the number of road accidents over the last week due to snow and icy weather conditions.

That is according to new research from insurer AXA, which revealed motoring claims rose by 23.8 per cent compared to the previous week.

Furthermore, there was a leap of 85 per cent in single vehicle incidents, due to large numbers of drivers sliding off the road into stationary objects such as walls and trees rather than other cars.

Amanda Edwards of the company said: "We cannot stress enough to people how important it is to take precautions in the current cold snap … driving in snow and ice should be avoided unless absolutely necessary."

She added it is too early to estimate the financial cost of the insurance claims, but many people will already have experienced emotional trauma as a result.

Yesterday (December 7th), Green Flag stated it was expecting to see a record number of breakdowns due to freezing fog and remaining snow and ice.
