Road casualties in Scotland at record low, says Government

Date: 26/6/2013
Casualties on Scotland's roads have dropped to a record low, with the government's latest figures revealing an eight per cent drop in deaths since 2011.Yet despite the statistics indicating that safety measures are having a positive effect, Transport Minister Keith Brown insisted that there is more work to be done.
"While the numbers of fatal accidents have fallen again, one death on Scotland's roads is simply one too many, and our focus continues to be ensuring we drive the numbers down further," he said.
Indeed, the number of cyclists and pedestrians killed on the nation's roads actually increased in spite of the overall drop - something which Ian Aitken, Chief Executive of Cycling Scotland, said was "concerning".
He added that if more of the country's residents are going to be encouraged to take up cycling, they need to be assured they're going to be safe when taking part in the activity.
