Road congestion 'is a serious problem'

Date: 27/8/2010
The majority of Britons believe road congestion to be a "serious problem", new government figures have revealed.Around a quarter of people reported it causes difficulties on most of their journeys, while 90 per cent of adults think it is important the coalition solves the problem.
Furthermore, 66 per cent of respondents claimed traffic jams are worse in and around towns than on major roads, while 25 per cent of motorway drivers stated they experience congestion on the majority of their trips.
The Department for Transport also surveyed people on their views on the effectiveness of alternative road-charging systems.
Over half of Brits said the current scheme of paying for road use should be changed so they pay according to how often and where they drive.
And 30 per cent of adults thought a new system based on times of travel and route taken would be a success.
The Highways Agency recently announced work is set to commence on the M5 near Gloucester in order to reduce peak-time traffic.
