Road fatalities 'are a needless loss of life'

Road fatalities 'are a needless loss of life'

Date: 31/8/2010

Everyone needs to abide by road safety rules in order to reduce the "needless" deaths caused by motoring accidents, according to the International Basketball Federation (Fiba).

The organisation has teamed up with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe to launch a new road safety campaign that will tie in with the Basketball World Championship 2010.

With the slogan 'we play and drive by the rules', the project aims to encourage people, particularly young basketball fans, to abide by both sport and road regulations.

Patrick Baumann, Secretary General at the Fiba, said the body hopes to "hammer home" this message.

Many basketball players have lost their lives on the roads, he continued, which "is a needless, shocking and tragic loss of life [that] needs to be tackled urgently".

Recently, PC Raymond Neil of Grampion Police's road safety unit stated the impact of car accidents extends further than those directly involved.
