Road safety 'can be boosted' with technology

Road safety 'can be boosted' with technology

Date: 13/7/2010

Road safety may be improved if drivers are kept up to date with the latest technology, one expert has indicated.

Director of RoadSafe Adrian Walsh said the recent announcement by the Department for Transport that there has been a 12 per cent drop in the number of road fatalities is positive.

"But there is still a need to focus on road safety and the benefits that technology can afford, particularly for consumers," he added.

He explained research from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety revealed electronic stability control has helped to cut the number of collisions by more than 40 per cent, but many motorists are not aware these types of systems are available.

Mr Walsh stated consumers need to be informed of such technology so they can demand it when they purchase a new automobile.

Earlier this week, in an article for This is Local London, Hertfordshire's head of road safety Theresa Casbard noted speed cameras have made the county's roads safer.
