Road safety comes to the fore as winter encroaches

Date: 29/10/2012
Now that the clocks have gone back it is even harder to deny that winter is on its way and with it comes new road safety challenges.Scotland has already experienced a number of wintry showers, which are expected to continue for the next few days.
In response to these circumstances, (ACPOS) The Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland has started a campaign to help educate road users on the best ways to handle conditions in winter.
Chief Superintendent Derek Robertson said: "The Scottish weather is notoriously unpredictable and drivers can encounter a wide variety of different driving conditions during a single journey.
"As was highlighted during the extreme weather encountered in recent years, effective planning plays a huge part in everyone getting safely to their destination."
The Scottish Government has teamed up with eight police forces and road maintenance companies in order to carry out the campaign.
It is aimed at motorists and other road users as the nights get darker and the temperature gets colder with forecasters suggesting that much of Scotland will not be far above zero degrees this week.
Chief Superintendent Derek Robertson said: "This campaign is not solely directed at motorists, but everyone using our roads.
"Unfortunately, I know from experience that pedestrians, cyclists and joggers are involved in serious road accidents during the winter months."
One of the main messages which the campaign hopes to get across to motorists is to make sure that their vehicle is given a check up before winter sets in in earnest.
For other groups, such as cyclists, pedestrians and runners who might be using the roads, the winter necessitates extra visibility measures.
Further to wearing high visibility clothes, these vulnerable road users are also being warned not to engage in distracting practices such as talking on a mobile phone while on the roads.
Scottish Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill said: "I would encourage everyone to plan ahead, be prepared, always leave enough time for your journey and check the forecast before you leave."
