Road safety compromised by irresponsible driving?

Date: 26/7/2010
Motorists are compromising road safety by frequently making irresponsible driving choices, a new survey has indicated.Research from Co-operative Insurance revealed 54 per cent admitted to regularly driving in a reckless manner.
According to the findings, 12 per cent confessed to smoking while behind the wheel, while 53 per cent said they eat and drink while driving.
And despite it being illegal for drivers to use a mobile phone, seven per cent confessed they often do this.
Function Leader at the Co-Operative Insurance Grant Mitchell said driving a vehicle is probably the most hazardous thing individuals do every day.
"The consequence of taking your full concentration off the road could result in a road traffic accident, which could change lives forever," he added.
Last week, a report from Onepoll.com showed men think women drivers are distracted by other motorists, scenery and their kids when they are behind the wheel.
And a third of respondents stated they do not feel safe if their partner or wife is driving.
