Road safety event held for new drivers in Craven

Road safety event held for new drivers in Craven

Date: 29/7/2010

Road safety among young drivers in Craven is being driven home by experts who have urged sixth formers to participate in a safer driving course.

According to the Craven Herald and Pioneer, the Road Safety Task Group has managed to secure a £10,000 grant, which will be used to pay for a Pass Plus Scheme for approximately 100 new drivers.

The Pass Plus consists of six modules designed to help people who have recently completed their driving test.

Members of the local police force and staff from North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue visited a number of education establishments in the area, including South Craven School, Skipton Girls' High School and Settle College to encourage youngsters to get involved.

Road Safety Task Group Chairman Ben Cairns said young motorists "often get caught out by situations they have not encountered before such as motorways, night-time driving, rural driving and adverse weather".

Earlier this month, students a Riverside College, Halton were visited by Rob Potter, a Patrol Officer from the Highways Agency, who told pupils of the moment when he was hit by a drunk driver, Runcorn and Widnes Weekly News reported.
