Road safety improvements welcomed at York school

Date: 25/10/2010
A primary school in York is to benefit from £20,000 of road improvements after concerns were raised about children's safety. The funds will be spent on new signs warning motorists they are approaching a school, dropped kerbs and an improved cycle route to encourage more pupils to travel to school by bike.
Liberal Democrat Councillor for the region of Heworth Without Nigel Ayre welcomed the decision by highway bosses to carry out the work at Hempland Primary.
"Parents, pupils and the school have been keen to see these improvements made to improve safety for those who travel to school this way," he said.
It is currently difficult for children to cross the road, which "can be quite dangerous", Mr Ayre explained.
Earlier this month, the Leicester Mercury reported permission has been granted for the building of a new pelican crossing at Langmoor Primary in Oadby almost a year after the institution requested the safety measure.
