Road safety improving in Thames Valley?

Date: 16/6/2010
Motorists in the Thames Valley are more aware of road safety and the dangers associated with driving too fast, experts have suggested. The Thames Valley Safer Roads Partnership noted more individuals opted for a speed awareness course instead of a fine and three points on their licence when they were found to be speeding, the BBC reports.
In 2009-10 figures revealed 124,000 offenders were caught, but for the first time since the introduction of the scheme which was launched in 2003 - more people chose the education session.
"These courses are proven to change driver behaviour, making them less likely to re-offend and put others at risk," Roger Lawson from the Association of British Drivers remarked.
Claire Benson of Thames Valley Police stated the force wants to inform rather than alienate motorists and driver education is now an important follow-up to law enforcement.
Last week, officers from West Midlands Police launched an awareness course in a bid to cut the number of injuries and fatalities on the roads.
Anyone caught travelling over the limit will have the option of attending an informative session rather than accept three points and a fine.
