Road safety scheme gets underway in Leicestershire

Date: 9/12/2010

Work has begun on a road safety scheme in Leicestershire, which is aiming to reduce accidents on the busy 13-mile stretch of the A447 between Hinckley and Ibstock.

The initiative will include the introduction of improved hazard signs, new road markings and an additional right-turn lane, the BBC reports.

Work on the route - which has witnessed 88 accidents involving injuries over a three-year period - is expected to be completed in early 2011.

County Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport Lesley Pendleton remarked: "The speed-reducing measures form part of the county council's local transport plan, which aims to make Leicestershire's roads safer and reduce casualties."

The politician added she is pleased the concerns of residents regarding the accident spot are now being addressed.

It comes after the Department for Transport recently launched a new website in tandem with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents to enable road safety experts to evaluate their practices more efficiently.
