Road safety to be boosted in Northwich?

Date: 15/6/2010

Road safety may be boosted in Northwich as officials review the speed limits.

Over the last 18 months experts have examined the current speed limits and the council could soon implement a 30mph limit for villages in West Cheshire, the Northwich Guardian reports.

According to Anna Geroni, Road Safety and Sustainable Travel Manager for the council, the new speed limits will be put into practice during the next three years, providing funding is made available.

Ms Geroni was also quizzed on plans about introducing a 20mph limit around schools in the area, but she said this will not be happening.

"The average speed of vehicles is 5mph because the place is so congested, so it’s self policing," she remarked.

The specialist added teachers, parents and youngsters need to be responsible for their actions around education establishments.

Last week, Jo Staff from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents suggested motorists use technology like satellite navigation systems to enhance their driving rather than cause distractions.
